DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) _ Iowa voters have turned out in record numbers before the polls even opened and have breezed past the previous early voting peak set in 2008.

More than 673,000 Iowans voted by the end of the day Monday, nearly a 25 percent increase over the 2008 record of just over 545,000.

In that year's general election, about 1.5 million voters turned out, or nearly 73 percent of the 2.1 million registered voters.

Iowa has nearly 23,000 more registered voters this year than on Nov. 1 four years ago.
