MACY, Neb. (AP) _ Newly elected leaders of the Omaha Tribal Council say they plan to focus on economic development and child welfare issues once they take office.
Several council members issued a joint statement on Monday to highlight their priorities for the Omaha Indian Reservation in northeast Nebraska.
The new council chairman, Rodney Morris, says he wants to move forward with existing tribal development plans, such as strengthening utility services for residents and addressing the welfare of children and families.
Council member Gwen Porter says the tribe also plans to open a temporary casino by January while work is done to replace the Casino Omaha, which was damaged during the 2011 Missouri River flood.
Incumbent Jeff Miller was re-elected. He and Porter will fill the two open seats on the seven-member council.
