Sioux City area law enforcement were on the lookout for railway crossing violations Tuesday evening.

The point: To stop motorists from skirting under railroad gates, which not only carries a hefty $330 fine, but could be life threatening.

Union Pacific Railroad's Perry Garcia said, "You can have train movement in any direction at any time. Stay away from the trains, it's not a safe place to be."

The surveillance worked like this: An officer was on board the train and other officers were stationed at several intersections nearby.

When the officer on board saw a violation, he contacted his peers who then pulled over and cited the driver.

And the location at Singing Hills Blvd. wasn't chosen randomly. It's home to the highest rate of violations in the state.

Garcia said, "We've targeted this particular crossing because of its high count of broken gate incidents."

Not only is it illegal and dangerous to pass under a gate, you also can't stop on railroad tracks even if a train isn't coming.
