Some Hawkeye fans turned their focus away Friday's big match-up with the Cornhuskers to honor a friend and cancer survivor. Mark Allard, the former owner of Marty's Tap in Sioux City, battled kidney cancer and was successfully treated five years ago. But after a recent visit to Mayo Clinic, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Kevin Jacobe, the current owner of Marty's Tap, decided to host a fundraiser to honor the lifelong Hawkeye fan Allard.

Allard's friends say he shows no signs of giving up the fight. Tim Cronin, a good friend of Mark's and Sioux City native, says, "I think a lot of his friends are coming, there are some that have indicated they're coming from out of town. Eldon's donated some prime rib for today. We're looking forward to people coming down, saying hi to Mark. You know, it's not a pity party...it's a kick cancer in the butt party."

All proceeds from today's benefit including a silent auction will go toward the June E. Nylen Cancer Center to help patients with financial assistance, prescription costs, and other needs. Allard encourages men to be screened for cancer during checkups and become proactive with their health.
