Stanley Cox of Sioux City was running an errand for his fiancee when he picked up a lottery instant-scratch ticket that ended up winning him a top prize of $100,000.

The 49-year-old says he rarely plays $10 scratch games, but something prompted him to purchase the ticket.  "I seen it and I thought, ‘Oh, I'll just grab one,' and I did," Cox said. "Started scratching it and I seen the ten where it said ‘Win,' and I thought, ‘Oh,' so I stopped there and scratched across and it was a hundred thousand dollars."

Cox said he owes some of the credit to his fiancee, Julie Tasker, since she is the one who sent him to Hy-Vee, 3401 Gordon Drive in Sioux City in the first place; he said she also likes the sparkly look of the Gemstone 10s ticket, which attributed to him purchasing one.

Cox, who is a machinist at Malloy Electric in Dakota Dunes, S.D., called to tell Tasker his big news.  "She's like, ‘Oh, you're kidding with me!' And I'm like, ‘I'm not kidding with you,'" Cox said. "She said, ‘Don't be pulling my leg!'"

Cox claimed his prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Council Bluffs. He was one of 10 winners of prizes of $10,000 or more that came in after the Thanksgiving holiday to claim prizes. He said he considers himself a lucky guy, as he also won a $1,000 prize last year.  "I have my moments," he said with a laugh.

Cox said he plans to spoil himself a bit with his winnings; he's planning to buy a newer Harley Davidson motorcycle.  "I have one but it's a little older one so I'm trading it in for a new one," Cox said.  He also plans to purchase Tasker's wedding band with his winnings. They plan to get married in February.
