A Le Mars apartment fire has left 5 families looking for shelter for the night.

The fire erupted at 335 3rd Ave Southeast in Le Mars, Iowa early Monday afternoon.

Fire officials say the building holds 5 apartments. Only one was occupied at the time of the fire.

But the fire did not originate from that unit. Instead, it started in the back of the building.

When firefighters got on scene they entered from the front and were met with heavy smoke and flames.

Le Mars Fire Chief David Schipper said, "It basically free vented and we had fire coming out the windows and out the roof which pushed our interior crew to the floor and at that point I pulled everybody out of the building."

The fire eventually took a few hours to get under control. Nobody was injured in the fire and the cause is still under investigation.

Orange City and Merrill Fire Departments also helped fight the fire.
