Preventing bullying before it happens. That's a topic more than one thousand people tackled Tuesday while participating in Governor Branstad's bully prevention summit in Des Moines.

The goal of the prevention summit was to shine a light on the growing trend of bullying in the state. According to the most recent Iowa Youth Survey of grades 6th, 8th and 11th; half of them reported being bullied in school.

Governor Branstad said what is being done now is not enough, and this summit is the next step to stop bullying.

"It's comprehensive. This is large. It's really a summit. We're bringing experts from across the state and really the nation and were looking at what we can do To motivate the entire community in preventing bullying.

Thousands of teachers and students gathered and the summit, to brainstorm and share ideas on how to identify and stop bullying. Which Branstad admits has become much harder in this day and age because of social media, but he said he is excited about the participation at the summit and that it proves people are willing to do something about it.
