There's some major repair work starting at Gavins Point Dam in Yankton, South Dakota. Wednesday, crews began setting up equipment to repair the spillway slab. The record releases from the Missouri River Flood in 2011 caused erosion and breaks in the gravel underneath the spill way. Those now need to be filled in. The week of Thanksgiving, The Army Corp of Engineers began lowering dam releases, and now barges are being set up in preparation for repairs.

"The barges are going to be staging their debris removal, they're also going to be staging the divers from there. And they're just getting ready and loading equipment getting ready to start the job," said Dave Becker, project manager of the Gavins Point Dam project.

Becker says there are actually three parts to the project; the repairs to the spill way, further assessments of the dam, and debris clean up. It should all be done by next summer.
