It's never to early too learn about how to stay safe and warm this winter. the first thing homeowners can do before they turn on the furnace, is make sure the filter is clean, and if not, replace the old one with a brand new filter. If you turn on your heater and see smoke billow from the bottom, or the furnace makes a loud noise, those could be warning signs that your furnace isn't working properly. But there's some things homeowners can't check and for that, a professional should be called.

"Most importantly they'll check for efficiency and safety. They'll check to make sure the furnace is venting properly. You know just peace of mind of having a professional service to check the furnace is really highly recommended," said Bruce Kalin, president of Kalin Indoor Comfort, heating and air.

Kalin says it depends on the type of filter you have, but on average you should be changing your furnace filter about four times a year. Kalin says another good thing to remember when changing your filters, is to check your vents and make sure nothing is blocking them or stuck inside.
