A scary situation in South Sioux City has folks on edge, but it's also serving as a learning experience. Just after school on Tuesday, a Chevy Colorado approached a small group of kids at Covington Elementary in South Sioux City and asked them to get in. The kids firmly said no and quickly reported the incident to the school's office – something that Kevin Boneschans, the South Sioux City Schools Police Liaison, says was absolutely the right thing to do. "We all try to instruct our children on how to respond to stranger danger. These kids did what they were instructed to do. They politely stated no, no thanks, and ran."

Security cameras posted outside the school filmed the vehicle, a safety tool Superintendent Vernon Fisher says is invaluable. "We believe that from a safety perspective, our system of cameras and our ability to monitor what goes on in raises the level of safety for our kids."

In response to this, all kids from South Sioux City Community Schools are being sent home with information about the incident. Parents are being reminded to role–play stranger danger situations with their kids. That way their child will know what to do if this ever happens to them. Elaine Fader, whose grandson attends Covington Elementary School, says, "Every parent needs to talk to their child to make sure they're safe when they come home from school. Because mine walks every once in a while and it's very scary knowing now that there's somebody out there."

If you have any information regarding the vehicle or the two suspects, please call the South Sioux City Police at (402) 494-7555.
