A Sioux City veteran finally got the recognition he deserved. But, he wasn't here to claim it.
The children of Vern Sullivan received several service medals in honor of their father on Monday. Vern served in Vietnam, but the medals he'd earned there had been lost.
Congressman Steve King met Sullivan when he stopped into his bait shop this past summer and Vern told his story.
And, after all these years, his children realized how important those honors really were to their father.
"He wouldn't brag about what he had done [but] he was proud of what he did and he was proud of being in the military and fighting for our freedom. And he wore a Vietnam veteran hat every day of his life," said Lisa Hansel, Vern's daughter.
Vern passed away unexpectedly this fall. His daughter plans to display the medals along with the American flag from his funeral.
