A preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Bureau has shed some new light on a plane crash that rocked the small town of Correctionville more than a week ago.

According to the report, the plane struck some trees while trying to land at a small private airstrip near Correctionville. Roughly Fifteen minutes before the crash, the pilot told air traffic controllers that he had the airport in sight. The plane was roughly a half mile northeast of the airport when the collision occurred.

Investigators noted that the landing gear and flaps were both extended at the time of the accident.

According to reports, a thick layer of fog blanketed the crash site, and first responders reported visibility of around 50 feet.

The crash claimed the life of 53-year-old Lee Schroeder, of Oto, and 55-year-old James Smith, of Correctionville, who were passengers in the plane.

The pilot, 70-year-old Gaylen Knaack, also of Correctionville, suffered severe burns and other injuries. He is listed in fair condition at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, NE.
