Local city leaders sat down with several state legislators to highlight their top concerns headed into the new legislative session. The state's "Targeted Job Program" and property tax reform topped their list.

All those at the table agreed that economic growth is the key to keeping people in Sioux City and growing the area. The Targeted Jobs Program provides tax benefits for growing businesses.

"They gave us the ammunition that we needed. I mean 91 million dollars of investment in Sioux City, since 2007. You got 32 projects in Sioux City since 2007. Those have been real jobs in the community. And it gives us that ammunition we need to convince Central Iowans how important this is to the coastal cities."

The other main topic of discussion was property tax reform. The city says it wants the state legislatures to look at the rules and obligations they create to drive up property taxes, and to try and keep the burden off of homeowners.

"So one of the considerations is changing property tax code, reducing commercial taxes. We agree that it needs attention. But what we don't want is the residential property tax payers to feel that impact and see their costs go up."

The city told legislatures Tuesday, heading in to the January session, it's main goal is to keep this city whole. It does not want state legislatures doing something without considering what the cost will be to tax payers. The new legislative sessions begins next month.
