DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) _ Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad is urging school officials to review their safety plans in light of Friday's massacre in Connecticut, but does not plan to propose stricter gun-control measures or arming teachers.
The Republican governor Monday says that leaders ought not rush to action, but instead review the state's school safety guide, adopted this year. It covers a range of scenarios, including fires, tornados and the presence of an armed intruder.
Branstad noted that Connecticut, where 26 elementary school students and staff were killed Friday, has among the nation's strictest gun-control laws. Branstad said such measures: ``Don't necessarily solve the problems.''
Branstad urged county sheriffs not to approve firearm licenses for Iowans with histories of mental illness. He said: ``Prevention is where we need to try to focus.''
