With Sioux City's first real snow storm right around the corner, folks are gearing up.

"Getting ready for the bad weather that's suppose to be coming,"said Gloria Zimmerman, of Sioux City.

Zimmerman just bought four new all terrain tires for her car. She says when it comes to winter driving in Siouxland, it's always safety first.

"We're going to Omaha for Christmas and we needed the tires checked and found out they were bad so we had to get new ones," said Zimmerman.

Dan Nothdurft, owner of "Tires Tires Tires" in Sioux City, says the number one most important thing people need to check before driving in the winter is their tires.

"If your tires are getting low on tread, it means you'll have less traction which means less safety."

Nothdurft says studies show it takes a worn out tire 100 more feet to stop in slippery conditions, than a tire with better treads.

Other important things to check on your vehicle before the winter snow hits is make sure all your belts and hoses are in good shape. You also want to check the temperature of your radiator fluid. Also take a look at your exhaust system and make sure nothing is blocking or clogging the exhaust.

"If you have any leaks the exhaust will go inside your cabin, because you have your heater on and your windows are up," said Nothdurft.

Nothdurft says when it comes to driving safety, never take a chance. Because your tires could be the difference between you staying on the road, or off the road this winter.
