Starting Wednesday, the Army Corp of Engineers will be increasing releases from Gavin's Point Dam by 2,000 cubic feet per second. The increased flow Tuesday and Wednesday will amount to a total of 4,000 cfs. The additional amount of water will help ensure continuous water flow to areas downstream, as parts of the Missouri River start to freeze from cold winter temperatures.

"Essentially were raising the river levels so when the ice forms the communities, power plants and so forth will still be able to get water when it freezes."

Flows from the dam will remain at the increased level of 18,000 cfs for about the next month or so, depending on how much the river freezes. And crews were out on the Missouri River Tuesday finally getting started on the debris removal project near the dam.

Crews have been setting up for weeks and are now are expected to start removing debris that has gathered up in the spillway over the last 55years. The project is expected to be completed by the middle of February.
