This time of year can be especially tough on our wallets. But the Salvation Army's "Operation Toys" is helping to make sure that Siouxland children have a Merry Christmas.
The Christmas season is one for joy, but for some - like Marla Beermann of Sioux City - it's also a tough time to afford all the gifts she needs to get for her loved ones. Fortunately, the Salvation Army and Operation Toys is stepping in to help out. Marla says, "I would be at home crying right now if it wasn't for this. So this is very awesome."
This year, thousands of toys were donated from the community for Operation Toys. But it's not just gifts that were given to the 700 families. A Christmas Dinner is also sent home with each family. Major Von Vandiver, a Commanding Officer with the Salvation Army, says it's all in an effort to spread the Christmas spirit to everyone. Major Vandiver says, "Some families are really having a hard time. And I hope at least for one day, we can spread a little cheer, a little joy. And just really enjoy a special holiday."
And from families I spoke with, it seems this operation was successful. Liza Salazar of Sioux City, a mother of two, says, "I already picked out a couple toys for them and she...one of the volunteers asked me about a jacket. And it works out well because it's just hard right now for me."
The Salvation Army teamed up with Bomgaars, KCAU-TV, and Cargill to help with the event.
