Friday, the National Rifle Association proposed putting a trained armed guard in schools to protect students.

But just how costly would something like this be? And is it even feasible for schools to consider an armed officer at its doors.

"It'd be fairly costly," said Peter Stuerman, superintendent at Hinton Community Schools.

Stuerman says the cost would be equal to that of hiring a teacher. That being said, Stuerman says it's ultimately up to a school board to determine what it thinks is best for its school and it's students.

"I think as a school you make a determination as what you're going to build as community, and as a school in order to staff it the way we want to staff it. So you make those priority decisions."

Stuerman says in the past the schools have worked with the Plymouth County Sheriff's Office and local police if it ever needed anything, but he says it would definitely be a plus to have an officer on duty all the time.

"If you could combine them with another use, with really promoting the safety in the school and being an assistance in the school. It would be a benefit of us to have like a liaison officer," said Stuerman.
