Vermillion Police say one man is dead in a standoff that lasted more than twelve hours in Vermillion.

It happened in a home on Crawford Road, near the intersection of Main Street. Police responded to a reported domestic disturbance in the home around 1:00 Tuesday morning. Police quickly determined that the man inside was armed and two children were being held as hostages.

Overnight, neighbors in the immediate area were evacuated and negotiators made contact with the male subject barricaded inside. Around 4:30, he allowed the children to exit the home. Negotiators maintained contact with the man, who is a Vermillion resident, until about 10:20 this morning.

Law enforcement used tactical resources to secure the area, before trying to re-establish contact with the man.

At 1:30 Tuesday afternoon, the man was found dead inside the home with what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

No names are being released at this time.

Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted at the scene including: Vermillion Police, Clay County Sheriff, DCI, Yankton Police, South Dakota Highway Patrol, USD Police, and the Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
