A Jefferson, South Dakota family is homeless this Christmas night after their home was severely damaged in a fire this morning.

The fire sparked around 6:30 a.m. at a home at 405 West Dakota Street.

It took crews about six hours to fully put out the flames.

The family said all their Christmas gifts did burn up in the fire, but they are just glad everyone got out safely.

"What matters most is that the kids and the pets got out," said Amy Campbell-Schlotman. "We're just wishing we had the photos and memories that you can't buy, but we're okay and the Red Cross was here by 7:30 this morning and was here for a couple hours."

The American Red Cross will be putting them up in a hotel for the next few days.

The Jefferson Fire Department believed the fire was caused by electrical wiring.
