The new year means saying good bye to something many of you use or can find in your own homes right now. The 75 watt light bulb.
Harlan Lessman has been selling lighting fixtures for nearly 40 years in Sioux City.
"Our business is just an ever-changing business, so the manufacturers are always going to make a fixture that has some kind of light source in it," said Lessman.
By 2014, the majority of light bulbs left on store shelves will be compact fluorescent, or LEDs. The government is making manufactures phase out incandescent bulbs which have been an American staple for years.
"I like the light you get better from the old fashion light bulbs... but I'm all about energy and living a green life so," said Linda Massey, Sioux City.
The government says it's doing this because it wants people to switch to a more energy efficient light source.
"It sounds like it will help the environment, so if that's the case, than that's a good thing," said Kristie Wilshire, Sioux City.
This year it's the 75 watt light bulb, but next year the government will be phasing out the use of the 60 watt bulb and 40 watt bulb.
And not everyone thinks it's such a bright idea.
"I know they cost more... and I think the government is getting in to too many of our affairs," said Dave Binder of Sioux City.
