A new change in Sioux City has business owners paying for fire inspections, not the city.

Sioux City Fire Rescue conducts about 3,000 fire inspections a year at local businesses.

The fire rescue holds the responsibility to perform these inspections, but it's the businesses that will be paying anywhere from $25 - $1,000.

That money used to come from the City's General Fund. But that changed after a vote by the Sioux City City Council.

Mark Aesoph, Sioux City Fire Marshal said, "Basically, the Fire Department was asked to increase our revenue by $150,000 for this year. And there really is no other area where we can raise that kind of money on a consistent basis."

Inspectors look for things like doors operating correctly, updated inspection stickers on fire alarms, working fire extinguishers and emergency lighting.
