In an effort to meet government regulations for fuel economy, new vehicle transmissions in 2013 may have as many as 10 gears. The Transmission Shop announces that it will service these new complex transmissions.

The Transmission Shop, with four locations in the Dallas area, announces that the major car manufacturers are developing new car and light truck transmissions that could have as many as 10 gears, some of which will be on the market in 2013. The new designs are part of the American and European race to meet governmental regulations for fuel economy set to go into effect in this country in 2017. The Transmission Shop will service these new transmissions.
According to one automotive e-magazine, Chrysler will begin using a 9-gear transmission in its Chrysler and Dodge minivans in the first part of 2013. Currently, Chrysler offers an 8-gear transmission in its 2012 Chrysler 300S and Ram 1500 models. Also, The New York Times reports that GM and Ford will enter into an agreement to jointly develop even more sophisticated automatic transmissions, some of which could have as many as 10 gears.
The theory behind increasing the number of gears is that the more there are, the closer the ratios are. So, when shifts occur, the engine can find its most efficient performance speed while using the least amount of fuel. Since the engine is the largest user of fuel in vehicle operation, keeping it running in the “sweet spot” more consistently reduces gas consumption. Z Friedrichshafen, the European company that manufactures the eight-speed for Chrysler, says the transmission “delivers 11 percent better fuel economy than a standard six-speed automatic.” The higher-gear transmission also touts internal electronic controls that allow quick, easy and smooth shifting.
Under the Obama administration, fuel mileage goals for 2025 are 54.5 mpg. The rules phasing in that target begin in 2017. According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration news release, achieving the 54.5 mpg goal will result in “net savings (that) will be comparable to lowering the price of gasoline by approximately $1 per gallon.” The current fuel economy standards are 35.5 mpg through model year 2016. Companies have between now and 2017 to position themselves to meet the tougher standards.
