Excitement is running high in the small town of Correctionville, Iowa. That's because their newly built grocery store is near completion.

In 2009, the towns only grocery store burned down due to an electrical fire.

Ever since then, people in Correctionville have been forced to drive at least 40-minutes round trip to places like Moville to get their groceries.

But thanks to the help and support of the community and several volunteers, that's all about to change.

"It's been a rewarding experience even though it's been hard and long, but just being with the people that's all come forward and helped, it's just been tremendous." said volunteer, Mike Smith.

Smith says if it wasn't for his friend Gaylen Knaack, who had started the project, all this wouldn't have been possible.

Gaylen was critically injured in a plane crash back in December. That crash near Correctionville killed two of his friends, and Gaylen is still in the hospital recovering from third-degree burns.

"We miss him, it's sad he won't be here for the opening day, but he will be here for the grand opening," said Smith.

The store is expected to open as early as the end of January. But they're going to also hold a grand opening ceremony with the whole community in May.
