The Sioux City City Council is taking a critical look at an innovative tool the Sioux City Police Department wants to start using. A camera system placed on top of police cruisers is used to scan license  plates and detect for crimes like a wanted person, stolen  plates or parole violators.

Because of the sensitivity of this type of technology, the police department is teaming up with the ACLU to come up with rules for using the information the cameras gather. Sioux City Police Captain Marti Reilly says, "It does have every license plate that it passes by, but that's deleted at the end of the shift – none of that information is stored. The hit list on the license plates that it does discover, that is on our wanted list basically...it does capture that and is stored then for a specific amount of time in regards to an investigation."

The city council looked into the new technology and the police department's protocols during it's work session on Monday.
