Approximately 10 Airmen from the 185th Air Refueling Wing, Iowa Air National Guard, Sioux City will assist the 57th Presidential Inauguration on Monday.
The National Guard Bureau, Washington, D.C., has requested approximately 120 Soldiers and Airmen from the Iowa National Guard to assist federal, state, and local agencies with support missions for the 57th Presidential Inauguration on January 21, 2013.
The Iowa National Guard has activated the following personnel: approximately 100 Soldiers from Mason City's 1133rd Transportation Company, Iowa Army National Guard; approximately 10 Airmen from the 185th Air Refueling Wing, Iowa Air National Guard, Sioux City; and approximately 10 personnel total from the 135th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment, 185th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, and Joint Forces Headquarters, all based in Johnston, and the 71st Civil Support Team, located at the Des Moines Airbase. It is anticipated these Soldiers and Airmen will serve in support of the inauguration for approximately eight days, which includes personnel readiness processing and travel.
Duties will include transportation, attendee management, event ingress/egress, and support of military personnel. Additional information will become available as this mission develops.
A total of approximately 6,000 National Guard Soldiers and Airmen from 25 states and territories will supplement security, communications, medical evacuation and other support during the presidential inauguration period. Military involvement in the Presidential Inauguration dates back to April 30, 1789, when members of the U.S. Army, National Guard, and Revolutionary War veterans escorted George Washington to his first inauguration ceremony.
