There's some big changes coming to driver's licenses in Iowa, and it all has to do with security.

The state is now issuing what are called REAL ID driver's licenses and identification cards.

They're the same as what you have now but have a golden star in the upper right corner to indicate that you've provided additional information to get the ID.

"The documents that we see are going to have to belong to that person, and there's going to be a trail of any A.K.A's or aliases that they may have used. We're going to have to see all of that," said Rebecca Mortiz, examiner at Sioux City's Driver's License Station.

To get that gold star you're going to need to provide five forms of official documentation.

They are:

1)      Birth certificate or passport

2)      Social Security Card

3)      Two proofs of address

4)      Current driver's license.

If you have a valid driver's license right now the cost of a REAL ID is $1.

If your license is ready for renewal it will cost the same $20 renewal fee.

A REAL ID will help you move through places like domestic airport security more easily.

Instead of presenting a driver's license and a passport, you will only need to present the REAL ID card.

You do not have to get a REAL ID; however, security at federal buildings and airports will begin asking you to show them beginning December 1st, 2014.
