The cold weather and the flu are major problems this year for blood centers like LifeServe of Sioux City.

On Monday, the center said its facing shortages for all blood types and that they're increasing their calls asking for donations.

Between the cold weather and sickness, January is one of the center's toughest months for donations.

"We're just moving from one concern for us to another and as a result our inventory has dropped significantly over the weekend," said Jan Twait, LifeServe's Executive Vice President.

The center has been also sending out e-mails left and right which is a move they typically don't do.

But despite the shortage, there were some Siouxlanders there on Monday who said the cold didn't stop them for lending a helping hand.

"It's just a small thing you can do to help others out. But with so many people sick, the people who aren't should make the effort, come in and do what they can," said Barb Ludwig of Anthon, Iowa.

The center said it usually sees donations pick back up in mid February.

But until then, it encourages anyone who can to donate.
