If you made any energy efficient home improvements last year or this year you could receive tax credits for some of them.

When Congress approved the fiscal cliff deal, part of the deal reinstated certain tax credits.

Now homeowners can claim tax credits on a variety of high efficient and energy smart products.

You can't exceed $500 in total credits, but if you have not claimed any credits over the last six years you are allowed to claim them going back as far as 2006.

H and R Block Tax Advisor Debra Maguire-Hines says, "Its allowing with exterior doors, windows, skylights, and certain types of roofing. Like metal roofing and some of the asphalt ones. Now another confusing part on that is the energy star appliances a lot of people think that is a tax deductible on your taxes it is not unfortunately."

If you are unsure about any of your home improvements made in the past few years, you are encouraged to check with a local tax advisor for complete guidelines.

These credits are available:

10% of insulation materials and systems, not including installation.

10% of cost of qualifying exterior doors, windows, and skylights.

10% of the cost of metal and asphalt roofs.

$50 for a furnace fan/main air circulating fan.

$150 for natural gas, propane, or oil furnace or hot water boiler with an annual fuel utilization efficiency rate of 95% or higher

$300 for an electric heat pump water heater with an energy factor of at least 2.0

$300 for a high efficient electric heat pump

$300 for a high efficient central air conditioner

$300 for a natural gas, propane, or oil water heater with an energy factor of at least 0.82 or a thermal efficiency of at least 90%
