One word summed it all up.

"It was ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous."

That's what Zowie Martinson of Sioux City had to say after driving in the fog early Monday morning.

Even as a thick blanket of fog hovered over Siouxland, drivers still took to the roads but with a little extra caution.

"When I turned on the highway you couldn't see a great distance. You had to be really careful," said Dan Shoop of Lawton, Iowa.

"You had to be really cautious. Watch your lane changes," added Tom Heck of Sioux City.

And it's caution that Iowa State Patrol Officer, John Farley said people need to have when driving in foggy conditions.

"They feel that they can see far enough and they're driving beyond their abilities. That's when the accidents occur," said Farley.

Farley added that rear-end accidents are most common in foggy conditions.

"It's drivers not having enough reaction time to see that they're stopped and waiting for traffic to clear then rear-end that stopped vehicle in the roadway."

Here are some tips to remember when driving in foggy conditions.

1)      Slow down

2)      Drive with lights on low because high beams will only reflect the light back at you.

3)      Make sure to keep plenty of distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.

4)      Use lines and road reflectors on right side of the road as a guide.
