Monday was a landmark day as the city of Sioux City and Woodbury County agreed to work together on a new economic development zone.

The new zone will be in a broad area south of the Sioux City Gateway Airport.

It includes thousands of acres in and around the county's Liberty Business Park, the Southbridge Business Park and portions of Port Neal.

The city and county think the area will act as a place to support expanding businesses and industry.

"At least we don't have the impediment of each individual amenity working separately. That's the biggest thing I can think of in this area as long as I've been here which is close to 18 years," said Rob Marqusee, Woodbury County Economic Development Director.

The project will be financed by what's called "TIF" or tax-increment financing.

The new partnership also should allow the county and city to work in partnership on a new I-29 interchange in the area as well.

The city council and county board still need to give final approval to project in the upcoming weeks.
