If you're due a income tax refund, the check finally could be in the mail. Wednesday was the first day the Internal Revenue Service started accepting and processing most individual tax returns.
The start of this year's filing period was delayed after Congress made changes to the American Taxpayer Relief Act.
The IRS says about three of every four taxpayers will get a return this year. Folks have until Monday may 15th to file your return and pay any tax that's due. More than 147 million individual tax returns are expected to be filed this year.
H&R Block Office Manager Ben Simpson says it's a busy time of year. "At this time of year it's definitely a busy time. You know we've been gearing up for this and we work a lot of hours. We work hard but it's definitely rewarding work to help people with their financial situations," says Simpson.
Last year for the first time, 80 percent of all individual returns were filed electronically. According to the IRS, E-file, when combined with direct deposit, is the fastest way to get a refund. In 2012 about 75% refund filers selected that option. For more information about this year's filing rules go to IRS.gov.
