"Just three days is all the time a puppy would have before it had to be put down at the Yankton Pound in South Dakota, but thanks to the work of two women, over 70 dogs are being saved.
"I would get twenty dropped off at one time," said Lisa Brasel. Brasel works for Animal Control in Yankton.
Because of limited space at the pound, hundreds of innocent animals were put down.
"It was horrible. Very, very nice, pure bred dogs were being euthanized," said Brasel.
Brasel decided to do something about it. She called up her friend Barb Steinberg, who owns a local grooming shop, and the two of them started "Dakota Animal Rescue."
"They have to go somewhere, so here we are.," said Steinberg.
Here is where they are cleaned up, taken care of, and even given all their shots. It's strictly volunteer work for the two, who even take some of the dogs home with them if there's no room left at the shop.
"I want them to look good... we try to do everything we can.," said Steinberg.
And it's working.
"Sammie seems like the one for us!," said Dean Lammers of Hartington, NE.
Just this Saturday, Lammers and his family came in to adopt one-year old the German Shepard, Sammie.
"I think it's a great program that they're doing here, and I do feel like I'm saving her," said Theresa Lammers.
Dakota Animal Rescue has helped find homes for over 70 dogs in the one year since it's opened; bringing the number of euthanized dogs drastically down, from 100, to just three in 2012. But just as one dog is saved, there's another one needing rescue. More than 15 dogs have been dropped off since January 1st. And much like the pound, Steinberg is running out of room at her grooming shop, so they're hoping a little extra love goes a long way, and these guys can find a full time home.
