For Nurse Sue White at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, wearing a mask at work has been a daily routine lately.

Like Sue, nurses and hospital staff are wearing masks to protect themselves from catching the flu and from spreading it.

"Not having your flu injection or immunization, then you do have to wear a mask while you are at work. Just as a preventative to protect everyone else," said White.

But that's not the only precaution they take.

From wiping down doorknobs and phones with sanitizing wipes, they try to stop the spread.

"Hand washing in and out of patient's room. Not leaving any articles around, disposing of things as readily as you use them," she added.

Sue said she also tries to eat right and get enough sleep to keep her body healthy, which something she said comes with the job is.

"We try to take care of ourselves because we are in the health profession. I think it does help you in the long run."
