There will soon be fewer people going to prison in South Dakota. On Wednesday Governor Dennis Daugaard signed into law a plan to cut the state's prison costs.

The plan includes treating more nonviolent offenders through intensive probation, parole and other programs outside prison walls.

Officials say the measure will avoid the need to build two new prisons.
