It's been almost 2 months since the worst elementary school shooting in U.S. history and schools everywhere are reevaluating their security measures, that includes Sioux City.
Sioux City schools already have security measures in place, like 24/7 locked doors.
But when facing a shooter, is that enough?
"I consider that our role. I consider that our responsibility to ask those questions on behalf of the community," said Sioux City School Board Member Doug Batcheller.
Doug Batcheller and one other Sioux City School Board member have expressed interest in researching bulletproof glass as an option for future schools.
In fact, Sioux City Superintendent Paul Gausman says he's already been asked by the school board to look into it and he has done that.
And while he acknowledges the safety benefits, the price tag may be daunting.
"We're going to need stronger doors as well to support the weight of the glass, stronger hinges to support the weight of the stronger doors that has the stronger glass in it. Those kinds of things come into play," said Dr. Paul Gausman, Superintendent of Sioux City Community School District.
The conversation is still in its early stages.
Aaron Iacino is the Vice President of Siouxland Safety Services, a company that assesses the security in area schools.
So, is bulletproof glass his ideal option for increased measures?
"No, I think school resource officer would be more much well spent. Because they're not just good for active shooters and things like that but they help curve a lot of kids from going down bad paths," said Aaron Iacino.
There are currently 6 on-duty police officers for Sioux City's 23 schools. Superintendent Gausman says he's open to adding more.
