Robots took over the gym at Sergeant Bluff Luton Middle School Saturday. Hundreds of high schoolers participated in this years First Tech Challenge Qualifying Tournament. Teams of up to ten students, spent the last several months designing, creating, building and programming these intricate robots.

"Building a robot you learn how many times you can make the same mistake... and how many times you can come up with the wrong answer," said Christopher Van Horn, Blair, NE.

"We built it up on the CAD program on the computer, drawing everything up and all the mechanisms," said Brian Hurst, from Blair, NE.

"We currently have 365 man hours on this robot," said Van Horn.

This year's theme is called "Ring it Up."

A total of 23 teams competed Saturday. Four will qualify and go on to compete at Iowa State. The competition was sponsored by the Pioneer Valley 4-H Club.
