Bishop R. Walker Nickless of the Diocese of Sioux City said he couldn't believe his ears when he heard that Pope Benedict XVI will be resigning later this month.

He said he commends the Pope though for stepping down because of his age and health.

"I think it's a real gift to the church that the Holy Father has seen in his wisdom to say, 'It's time.' You know, he's on top, it's a good time. He's done so much for the church, and we're just so grateful for his ministry," said the Bishop.

A college of cardinals from all over the world will meet in Rome, shortly after the end of February to elect a new pope, most likely it will be amongst one of them.

Bishop Nickless said he admires the pope for his hard work and persistence in serving the church.

"I'm just going to admire his calm, persistent presence. He did the best he could for as long as he could. He is a great example of someone who has given their life to the church and helps others."
