Community & Tradition as Important as the Food on Lenten Fridays

The Lenten Season is a short one. But for the next several Fridays, fish will be on the menu for many local families. And it means many local Catholic Parishes are feeding the masses.

Around 270 pounds of cod were fried for Friday's fish fry at St. Michael Church in Sioux City. Eleanor Beacom has helped with the fish frys at St. Michael's since 1955 and says that she's seen many changes since she first started prepping the meals. Eleanor says, "Oh yes, we made the coleslaw and the dressing...everything was homemade. Absolutely. It was a lot of hard work."

What hasn't changed is the spirit of the event – not only do fish frys offer good food, but it's also about building as a community.

At the Nativity Church in Sioux City, Larry Harrington has been serving up fish for 27 years. He loves to see younger people get involved and help out at the events. "We get the youth out, we have fish, they come out and enjoy themselves. It's a nice social event for everybody."

A social event that will build some lifelong traditions.
