18,000 people, that's basically the population of Le Mars, Iowa, times two. That's how many people need a bone marrow transplant every year.
That's exactly why Morningside College hosted a bone marrow match drive Tuesday. The even ran out of pamphlets to give people, which is a welcome sign to one woman in particular.
Robin Bird of Dakota City, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, or AML, back in October of 2011. She need a bone marrow transplant, and after several months, and one outside donor later, she had it.
Bird says there are truly no words to describe how she felt, when she found out there was a match.
"It was just elation, just grateful, oh I just don't even know, I can't explain it," said Bird.
Bird may actually get a chance to find out who her mystery donor is in the next couple months.
Now there's another Robin who's well on her road to recovery. Good Morning America's Robin Roberts will be back at the anchor desk Wednesday morning for the first time, in five months. You can catch her big return to GMA right here on Channel 9, at 7 a.m. right after our morning show.
