When it comes to canceling or delaying school, Superintendent Paul Gausman says it's a team effort, but ultimately, he has the final say.
The process begins days before the storm. Gausman monitors and communicates with the National Weather Service about the forecast.
Gausman also keeps in contact with other superintendents from area cities and towns.
Then, the School District communicates with the City about its plowing schedule.
"We have a team of people who begin driving the roads and studying the conditions at about 3:30 in the morning. And being in Northwest Iowa, the timing of the storm sometimes makes that really helpful, and other times we know that it's coming a little bit later," said Superintendent Paul Gausman.
If school is delayed or canceled, the District can call 15,000 homes in 5 minutes to notify parents and staff members.
And of course, you can find school closings right here at kcautv.com as well.
Now get this, Dr. Gausman says historically, March sees the most amount of snow days, so kids, there's still hope for you yet.
