Omaha Power District Issues Alarm On Billing Scam

Posted: Updated:

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ Omaha Public Power District has issued a warning about billing scams.

People pretending to be from OPPD's billing department have been calling OPPD customers. Some callers say the customers' bills are delinquent. Other callers say they need immediate credit card payments for installation of new equipment such as meters.

The callers demand credit card numbers or other financial information that is later used for fraudulent purchases.

OPPD says that in some scams, customers have been urged to turn off their home or business security systems to help OPPD save energy and the customers save money.

OPPD says none of the callers demanding cash payments or financial information work for the district.

The district says people with questions should call 402-536-4131 within Omaha or 877-536-4131 outside of Omaha.
