Kelly Flynn has been named South Sioux City's new Economic Development Director.
Flynn earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of South Dakota in 1980. He started teaching Biology in South Sioux City while also coaching football, basketball, and track. He earned a Masters in Administration in 1990 from Wayne State College. He taught for 20 years and has been the Assistant Principal/Activity Director the last 13 years.
He and his wife Barb have raised four children all of them graduating from South Sioux City HS and going on to earn degrees at the University of South Dakota. While Kelly has been with the School system the last 33 years, Barb has been with the Mercy Medical Center as a nurse.
He has served on several local, state, and National Committees including the WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) All Star Selection Committee and will be going to New Orleans next month as a supervisor for the All Star Game and the Final Four.
Coaching honors include being a part of 11 State Championships at SSC, playing in National Tournaments in Santa Barbara California, Chicago Illinois, Naples Florida, Washington DC, and having nationally ranked teams by the USA Today. He was chosen to Coach the WBCA All Star Game in Atlanta Georgia, and the McDonalds All Star Game on the Notre Dame Campus. He was named the National Coach of the Year in 2012.
Flynn commented, "I look at the Economic Development job as a tremendous opportunity to continue to live here and to do all I can to make our community a great place to live".
Many of the Activity Director duties will help with this position as the Economic Development Director. With the supervision and coordination of 19 different sports and other activities, along with event scheduling, facility management, organizing and directing tournaments. Also being responsible to hire, lead and evaluate teachers/coaches and develop and manage a budget. "Each of these opportunities and challenges will be a great asset and I look forward to the opportunity," Flynn stated.
Flynn will finish out his contract with the South Sioux City School system and start with the City and the new position in June.
