The Sioux City Community School District is making significant improvement on ensuring students graduate, according to the Iowa Department of Education.
The District's 2011-2012 graduation rate rose to 84.68 percent and the 9-12 dropout rate decreased to 3.27 percent. Since the 2009-2010 school year, the District's graduation rate has risen 5.22 percent while the dropout rate decreased nearly 3 percent or by 140 students.
"This celebration for the school district is the result of the hard work of our staff and students. We continue to hold one of the highest graduation rates of the urban schools in the state, and this increase is truly remarkable. I thank our staff for their commitment to our students by giving them every opportunity to succeed," said Dr. Paul R. Gausman, superintendent for the Sioux City Community School District.
The 4-year cohort graduation rate is calculated for the class of 2012 by dividing the number of students in the cohort (denominator) who graduate with a regular high school diploma in four years or less (by the 2011-2012 school year) by the number of first-time 9th graders enrolled in the fall of 2008 minus the number of students who transferred out plus the total number of students who transferred in.
