State Representative Chris Hall of Sioux City is introducing legislation this year in the Iowa House to protect seniors from property tax hikes and give homeowners more time to appeal rising property valuations which lead to higher property taxes.

"It's time for us to freeze property taxes for our most vulnerable seniors who want to stay in their homes," said Hall.  "Iowa seniors who have worked hard their whole lives but have trouble making ends meet in retirement should not be burdened with rising property taxes.  This bill will make life a bit easier for seniors living on a fixed income."

Under Hall's plan, any Iowan 65 years or older who makes under $30,000 would have their property taxes frozen.  Eligible seniors would fill out a simple form and return it to the county assessor with their property tax payment. Another part of Hall's plan would give all homeowners more time to appeal when they believe their property taxes have been raised unfairly.  The bill would allow up to 30 days for appeal, instead of the current 20 days limit.

"Our property tax system is complicated and homeowners deserve more time to understand their property tax bill and appeal if they believe the taxes on their home have risen too dramatically," added Hall.
