Briar Cliff University held its annual health and wellness fair Friday and for the first time the public was also invited.

At the free event, health and safety departments from across Siouxland offered free health screenings and consultations. Police officers set up a drunk driving and texting while driving simulator while the Siouxland Humane Society had a pet therapy area.

Organizers say the event is meant to encourage lasting healthy habits.

"We decided to open it to the public because we had such a wonderful response from our vendors that we felt that it was something that we felt that it was something that the whole community could enjoy," said Donna Schneider from Briar Cliff.

Mercy Air Care also gave helicopter rides. Around 600 students went to the health fair last year and even bigger numbers were expected this year.
