At Monday's city council study session, the city will consider upgrades to its radio communication system.

The Starcomm system covers the tri–state area including Woodbury County, South Sioux City, and North Sioux City, but Sioux City covers over half of its operating cost.

The upgrades need to be done because in 2018, the current system will no longer be supported.

"If we don't start implementing some of the upgrades now, when 2018 hits we won't be able to do anything. We're going to have to go out and purchase a whole new system is what they're telling us," said Police Chief Doug Young.

The total cost for the system upgrade is approximately $4 million.
