On a night when as many as three girls basketball teams from Siouxland could win state titles, Central Lyon and Western Christian have already hoisted championship trophies.
In Class 2A defending champion Western Christian edged Lawton-Bronson 75-58 to win a second straight title. Brooke Woltersdorf lead the Wolfpack with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Despite losing 3 players to injury during the game, Lawton-Bronson pulled to within 5 points in the third quarter but ended the season with a loss. Josie Kopal left the game in the first half with a head injury but still lead the Eagles with 17 points.
Making it's first trip to state, Central Lyon nipped Newell-Fonda 63-61 to claim the 1A title.
Kori Schulte scored 15 points and hit five key free throws late in the game to help Central Lyon.
Central Lyon built a 15-point lead early in the fourth quarter, then had to hold off a furious charge by No. 2 Newell-Fonda (24-3), which lost in the state finals for the fourth time and is still looking for its first championship.
Newell-Fonda three times cut the lead to a single point, but the team couldn't make the shot it needed to get the lead. Renee Maneman led Newell-Fonda with 18 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.
