The American Red Cross has released a new smart phone app that will be a great resource during our upcoming severe weather season. We haven't seen severe weather yet, but the peak of tornado season is during the months of March through May.

The new Tornado App offers many services including location–based notifications for when a tornado or severe thunderstorm may threaten. Inside the app, there's a toolkit that has a flashlight, strobe light, and alarm to help out in an emergency situation or notify search teams of where you are. There's also tornado trivia and climatology using data gathered by the National Weather Service.

The Executive Director of the Siouxland American Red Cross, Tammy Lee, says, "It will help you be as prepared as you can be before a tornado happens. And then once something strikes your area, you can go and find out immediately shelters that are available and what kinds of things you need to do immediately following a storm."

This is the fifth free weather safety app released by the American Red Cross. During Hurricane Sandy, over 400,000 people used their Hurricane App.

The Tornado App is now available across all mobile devices on phones and tablets. It makes a good compliment to our KCAU app for up-to-date weather information.
