LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ Lawmakers are reviving a bill that would establish a winner-take-all system for Nebraska's five electoral votes.
A legislative committee will hear a measure Wednesday that would end the state's current practice of splitting its electoral votes in presidential elections. Two electoral votes go to the statewide popular vote winner, while the remaining three are given to the candidates who win each congressional district.
The state split its electoral votes for the first time in 2008, when Barack Obama was elected president. Obama captured Nebraska's 2nd District electoral vote, which includes Omaha.
The debate on the winner-takes-all legislation has remained political. Republicans generally support winner-takes-all, while Democrats prefer splitting the votes.
The bill was introduced by Sen. Charlie Janssen, of Fremont.
